We developed a test of nine computerized and adaptable visuospatial tests that teachers and researchers can use to measure students’ visuospatial and spatial abilities.
We have investigated in-depth some of these tests (both in university and technical students) and analyzed the effects of gender and academic background on their results.
Virtual Card Rotations Test
Test of mental rotation with two-dimensional shapes. From an array of 60 different shapes, a typical test employs 20 figures, where participants must answer which figures are rotated and which are rotated and mirror-reversed. Time, degree of rotations and many other variables can be customized.
Corsi Block Tapping Test
Test of working memory or short-term memory that measures the visuospatial processor, mostly the spatial component. The participants must memorize and replicate a sequence of blocks highlighted in a certain speed. Speed, color, time, sequences, and many other variables can be customized.
Visual Patterns Test
Test of working memory that measures the visuospatial processor, mostly the visual component. The participants must memorize and replicate arrays of filled squares, which change in size. Color, size, speed, help by numbers, and many other variables can be customized.
Dual Tasks of Working Memory
Tests of working memory where a memory task is interrupted by a processing task. The two memory tasks available involve memorizing rotations of arrows or a position of a filled square. The three processing tasks are composed of letters, symmetry patterns, or visual equations. Tasks, speed, color, and many variables can be customized.
Spatial N-Back Task
Test of executive resources of the visuospatial component of working memory. The participants are given patterns of filled squares and they must determine if these were presented certain screens before, being interrupted by distractor patterns. Color, size, speed, and many others can be customized.
Rotated Patterns
Test of mental rotation and short-term visuospatial memory that asks participants to rotate a pattern of squares in their minds and then answer how would these look. Direction of rotation, pattern, color, speed, and many other variables can be customized.
Colored Bars
Tests of visuospatial memory with two measures using arrays of colored bars. In one measure, participants must determine if one bar changed color. In the other measure, participants must answer how the rotation of one bar was changed. Number of bars, colors, speed, and other variables can be customized.
Coordinative Complexity Tasks
Tests of visuospatial logic when comparing two arrays of shape elements. The participants must answer how one element of the right array has been changed from the original left array. Type of transformation, number of shapes, and other variables can be customized.
Four Square Ordering
Tests of logic when following visual instructions to join four squares half-filled with different triangles. The instructions concern individual squares and blocks of two. Color, number of instructions, and other variables can be customized.
